Najnowsza wersja beta systemu Windows Serwer została udostępniona do publicznych testów. Orogramowanie o nazwie kodowej Longhorn przeszło już dwie fazy testowe. Do trzeciej mogą przystąpić wszyscy chętni.

Pierwotnie program miał zostać wydany w trzecim kwartale 2007, ale Microsoft przeniósł datę premiery na koniec roku. Beta udostępniona do testów oferuje pełną funkcjonalność finalnej wersji Windows Server, z wyjątkiem funkcji Viridian, odpowiedzialnej za wirtualizację. Viridian prawdopodobnie opóźni się aż do przyszłego roku, kiedy to zostanie wydana jako osobny dodatek.

Funkcje już zaimplementowane, to m.in. interfejs dla Windows PowerShell, obsługa serwerów wydruku, Lightweight Directory Services i Active Directory. Longhorn oferuje również takie opcje zabezpieczeń, jak zaawansowana wersja Windows Firewall. Microsoft oczekuje, że najnowszą betę ściągną setki tysięcy użytkowników. Wersja x86 zajmuje 1,8GB, a dla x64 2,5GB.
